Toby Sibbick has left Hearts of Midlothian, joining Wigan Athletic on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the English League One side.

Sibbick had one year left on his contract at Tynecastle Park and was expected to depart this summer. The player had conversations with Steven Naismith at the end of last season where he was told his minutes would be limited.

“That’s natural in football as your squad evolves over time, so it makes sense for him to move on," Naismith told the club's website.

“I’m happy that he’s got a move to a good club. Toby is an excellent professional and I’m sure he’ll do well at Wigan.

“I thank him, on behalf of everybody at the club, for all of his efforts at Hearts and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Sibbick played 86 games in his second spell with Hearts having rejoined midway through the 2021/22 season from Barnsley. He helped the club qualify for Europe in three consecutive seasons and will be most remembered for his solo goal in a win over Hibs in the Scottish Cup at Easter Road last campaign.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to thank @JamTarts for the past 2 and a half years," he said on social media. "It was a pleasure to come back and play for this club. As always, some huge ups and some downs. Made some friends for life which I’m grateful for and I wish them nothing but the best."
