Gary Mackay-Steven featured for Kilmarnock today in a Reserve Cup clash at Rugby Park.

The former Celtic, Dundee United and Hearts man has been training with Derek McInnes' side for over a month now, but he is yet to put pen to paper on a deal.

McInnes has said that no deal was on the table for the tricky winger, but it remains to be seen if he will be offered a route back into football.

He explained last month: “He’s been in this week and last week. Obviously, I’ve worked with Gary before.

“I spoke to his agent in the summer and he was still coming back from his foot injury at Hearts.

“He’s been in at Hearts training even though he’s not under contract and then just been keeping in touch.

“Then a couple of weeks ago, Gary reached out to me and asked for training facilities and we were glad to help him.

“I need to say, he’s been terrific. He’s trained every day. He looks good and he’s shown his qualities.

“You would have seen that if you saw any training, so we’re really pleased to get him in and help him out, but it is just a case of that at the minute, nothing more than that.

“It’s still early days for Gary to be thinking about anything. It’s just helping him out and getting him back to fitness.”

Mackay-Steven played just six games for Hearts last season as he suffered a number of injury issues.

He suffered a broken foot last December, and a setback in his recovery towards the summer meant he was ultimately released by his Tynecastle employers.

Killie allowed GMS to train as he continued his rehab and he has recently spoken of how he is close to full fitness.

Today he featured in a reserve clash against Ayr, with Kilmarnock losing out 2-1.

Former Morton defender Lewis Strapp also appeared in the contest as a trialist.
