Steven Naismith was unable to pick out any part of his team’s performance at Parkhead for special praise – because the Heart of Midlothian head coach believed that everyone played their part to perfection as the men in maroon sealed a famous victory.

Hearts hadn’t won a Premiership match at Celtic Park since 2007 but first-half goals from Lawrence Shankland and Stephen Kingsley put the visitors in the driving seat in Glasgow’s east end, and Brendan Rodgers’ side were unable to drag themselves back into the game.

The Gorgie outfit carried an attacking threat going forward and kept their opponents at bay admirably over the course of the 90 minutes, but Naismith was unsure if this was the best performance of his tenure so far.

“I don’t know,” Naismith told BBC Sportsound. “It’s a good result. It’s one that gives us confidence, it’s one that moves us forward, and it’s one that I believe we can do consistently.

“This game is different to others that we will come up against but you have to have a real focus against the Old Firm. You have to have belief and we showed today that we have got belief.

“It’s a great win because of our record here. In terms of a big win – people were saying that we needed a big win for the season. Last week was a big result in terms of a bad one that we needed a reaction from, and we got that today.

“I have consistently said that you have got to go into games against the Old Firm challenging. You’re not going to win them all but you give yourself a chance and I think we did that today. We needed a structure to work from, we needed to be disciplined, we needed to be composed on the ball and say, ‘we are good enough to play against your press’. I would argue that Celtic have got the best press in the league.

“And then we have got to have composure in the right moments. We have shown every bit of that today, which is pleasing. But we believe as a group and I believe that we are good enough to do that. We were close at Ibrox and we were close at Tynecastle against Rangers earlier in the season. And today we got the result that I think we deserved.

“In possession we were good on the ball and we were brave. Out of possession we worked from a structure. With clubs like the Old Firm, you don’t have anywhere near the same resources so you have got to be creative with the way that you set up. You need to be brave when you have the ball and cause them problems, and we did that. We have shown that.

“We gave Macaulay a debut as well, we had subs that came on, guys who are just back from injury starting and getting through the game. Jorge Grant gets an injury five minutes into the game and he was willing to play for as long as he could. All these aspects are pleasing but it is just the next step on what we hope will be a successful run for the club.”
