Lawrence Shankland said he was "proud" of his Heart of Midlothian team mates for the performance they put to defeat Scottish champions Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow.

It was the club's first league win at Celtic Park in 16 and a half years.

The Hearts captain jokingly suggested in an interview with Sky Sports that the key to the win was the players' Christmas do but revealed he questioned the team's mentality after the 2-1 loss at Aberdeen last weekend when they gave up a 1-0 lead at half-time.

"We managed to take our chances, we were disciplined in our defending and that gets us the result," he said. "It is always good to get ahead, especially when you come to places like this. Celtic are a good team and you will be under pressure for quite a lot of the game so to get ahead it gives you that breathing space and when you get two it gives us a big thing to hold onto.

"Then on in we had to defend well and I thought our discipline was really good, defensive shape really good. I'm proud of the boys especially after last week where I questioned them to be honest after the game, the mentality of us. That was a huge question of us today, from half-time to hold out and I'm proud of the boys. It was a good performance. "

Shankland believes Hearts may have learned a valuable lesson from the defeat at Pittodrie.

"Getting that second goal gives you breathing space but maybe last week was a lesson for us as well," he said. "Aberdeen put us under a lot of pressure last week. To be honest, they got the best of us and got the win. Maybe it came at a good time that lesson, and it looked like we learned from it today. Proud of the boys for that performance."
