Can you sum up your emotions?

To be honest I was frustrated with that wee final pass when we were attacking. I don’t think the game was particularly great and I thought it lacked quality in general. Some of our build-up was decent but we didn’t have that calmness to find the right pass, we didn’t find the right pass. It was a mental first 15 minutes with the two penalties and the two saves. But then when you have somebody like Shanks it’s never over. Having a good defensive structure and not giving up goals gives us a chance and then when Shanks is there, you know it’s more than likely that he will put it away if he gets a chance – which he did.

Derby wins help win fans over, is that even more pleasing given that some fans were calling for your head a month ago?

That’s the game and it will happen again if we don’t win our next two. But as I consistently say, I am comfortable with it and I know that’s the way it is now. There is progress – look at clean sheets, away wins, the way we’re playing. There has been lots of change and loads of improvements, but there is so much more to go. The biggest thing for me tonight is that we found a way. That’s a great trait to have as a team. We didn’t play our best but we defended well and we found a way to win. That’s credit to the boys. It’s a pleasing night.

How pleased are you for Zander Clark to have a night like that? There is a lot of pressure on him with Craig Gordon returning.

I think there has been pressure put on externally. I’ve been consistent in what I’ve said – he is a top goalie and he has had a brilliant year. The circumstances he is dealing with is that there is a legend of the club, who is an unbelievable goalie, back fit. That’s competition for places and it’s not easy to deal with, especially when it’s a goalie and there is only one position. But Zander has dealt with it perfectly. He is a top goalie. He took his chance a year ago, he’s come in and made his Scotland debut and he has made a massive impact for us tonight.

We keep coming back to this subject, when you have a match-winner like that does it get to a point where it is almost impossible to sell him?

Every team in Scotland will sell their players if they get offered a fortune. That's a fact, What we've got is a player who is loved here, he enjoys it as you can see because he is scoring and playing really well. He's got 18 months on his contract. While he is at the club we need to enjoy him. We as a club have a comfortable stance of where we are it. Not just with Shankland. With any player. That's the evolution of football. We'll sit down with Shanks when the time is right and see if we can keep him at the club for longer. If that's not the case he might be here for six months, he might be there for 18 months, enjoy him while he is here. Enjoy him week to week as he produces that but hopefully, as a whole, we can enjoy a club moving forward and being successful.

You mentioned Craig Gordon being a club legend. If Lawrence keeps doing things like that he's going to be the same isn't he?

I don't think he is far off it. His goal record, his goal return. Is there many better than him and John Robertson. I’m not so sure. He is in that bracket for me. I think there is still more to come. His goal return is unbelievable, but that’s the easiest part because he has done it his whole career.  His hold-up play now, his standing in the game is miles from where it was when he was at Ayr or Dundee United.  He understands the game, he is now a leader, he is the captain. He is an all-round centre forward who I would argue is now the best finisher in Scotland.’

Can being a club legend keep him here?

It will play a part, but so does money, so does enjoying football, so does getting to as high a level as you can. I think what is probably driving Shanks at the moment is making that Euros squad as well – which he has in the next six months.’

Can the Euro squad motivation keep him here then?

If Real Madrid came in, no. But it will play a part along with style of play, finance, the run you are on and how comfortable you are at a club. All of these things play a part for a footballer. It’s not just a case of ‘I’m moving because everyone says I am moving.’ Whether it happens or it doesn’t it’s just the evolution of a football club.

How do you replace him if he goes?

That’s part and parcel. That’s probably something where I would want to get to a point where if a player leaves you have a list there you can comfortably go at. We had it with Josh Ginnelly in the summer, who was a big part of last season for me. He moved on and we had to make different signings. But, also, when players go out the team it creates opportunity for someone else. I was at Kilmarnock, Kris Boyd scored all our goals. He went to Rangers in the January and everyone said 'what is going to happen now?'. Fortunately, me and Colin Nish stepped up and scored goals. It happens at every club no matter what position, an opportunity arises.

Do you think the likes of Tagawa, Vargas and Oda can step up if they have to in the future?

I am comfortable with our squad. I think we have a good squad. We've got young players, the ones mentioned are still young. They have good moments, moments that could be better. Over time I think they have real quality in the squad. I'm comfortable with it all.

How is Barrie McKay?

I just think it was a knock. I don’t think there was anything much in it. He took a kick but I don’t think there was too much in it. The squad have had a tough time with the schedule of games and have come up against Hibs who had more rest and will be the same against Ross County, but we need to find a way.

Will anybody else be back for the weekend?

No, I don't think so. I don't think there'll be many changes.
