Lawrence Shankland hailed his mentality after bagging a stunning winner for Hearts in the Edinburgh derby at Easter Road.

The Scotland international fired home a magnificent strike in stoppage time to earn Steven Naismith’s side a huge three points on enemy territory.

It was not all plain sailing for Shankland though after the Tynecastle skipper missed a first-half penalty and his Hibs counterpart Martin Boyle was also unsuccessful from the spot after being denied by goalkeeper Zander Clark.

Shankland thanked his goalkeeper at the end of the game, explaining: “To produce a moment like that so late on is obviously a great feeling.

“I have Zander to thank too. He bailed me out in the first-half by saving that penalty. I owe him a beer!

“It is about bouncing back from these moments. Obviously missing the penalty, I didn’t have a great game at all to be honest. I wasn’t happy with my performance.

“You just wait for that one moment and if you can produce that then you can go home happy.

“A lot in my career I have had one opportunity and I have stuck it away. I get moments like that quite a lot.

“It is amazing to score that late in the game. It is a great feeling. When you stick one in the top corner you have to smile about it!”

On the penalty miss, Shankland added: “It is the first one I have missed in ages. Listen, it happens I was going to miss eventually. It is football.

“You see that with big Zander up the other end. It was a great save to be fair to him. Mine never even hit the goal I don’t think!

“We just need to keep going now. That is obviously a huge win tonight. That is a win at Parkhead backed up with two great wins. I am just delighted.”
