Heart of Midlothian have announced the signing of Colombian internationalist Andres Salazar, subject to international clearance, visa and Scottish FA approval.

The 21-year-old arrives on loan from Athletico Nacional in his homeland with the club understood to have an option to make the deal permanent.

In recent transfer windows, Salazar has been linked with various clubs in Europe but has opted for a move to Tynecastle Park to continue his career.

Salazar strengthens the left-hand side of Hearts' defence following Alex Cochrane's departure. Capable of playing as a full-back and wing-back, he will compete with James Penrice for the position.

The South American has had to be patient with the deal having taken time to get over the line due to factors like the Governing Body Exemption, work permit and visa. He has been in attendance at both the Rangers and Dundee games.

Steven Naismith believes Hearts are getting a "quality player".

“A lot of hard work has gone into making this deal possible so I’m happy that it’s now over the line," he told the club's official website.

“In Andres, we’re getting a quality player with loads of experience, despite his young age. He’s played domestic, continental and international football so he’ll bring that knowledge to the dressing room.

“His talent means there will be healthy competition amongst the squad for a place in the starting line-up, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
